Description
Fennel is native to southern Europe and Asia Minor. In ancient times fennel leaves were used to crown victors in games, and fennel was also used in the rites of Adonis. Fennel was introduced to North America by Spanish missionaries as a medicinal herb. It is now known in California as wild anise. English settlers brought their herb with them to the New England. In Puritan folk medicine fennel was taken as a digestive aid. The herb is still found growing on the sites of these early English settlements.
